Alex is interested in creating feelings of motion and balance through the combination of shape and space. The exploration of expressing gesture and movement through the formal language of line and form is fundamental to his work.
Material, process and finish represent the foundations of Alex's creative practice. The work develops through a process of cutting, bending and welding steel and the procedure of adding and subtracting. Using collections of steel forms in combination he can allow the work to lead its own creation and develop organically. The piece then evolves instinctively through the innate qualities of the materials used. He plays with the interaction of disparate pieces and works towards creating a cohesive composition.
Although distinctively abstract he hopes to evoke subtle references to the figure and expressions of figurative movement and emotions. A degree of spontaneity is combined with a level of thoughtful consideration, the success of a piece often lies in its directness, with a degree of immediacy of expression combined with a significant amount of measured, deliberate intention.
Steel is often using used in combination with other metals such as zinc, bronze and brass. Although often used to protect the work from deterioration, coatings are also used to unify the composition. The process of patination can then add dramatic effect to the surface of the finished piece.
